The Company was founded by John Easterling, known now as "Amazon John". As a young man, he was drawn to the Amazonian world. On one of the trips he became ill. He was exploring upriver on the Rio Ucayali, the main tributary of the Amazon. He knew he was in rough shape, chilled and sweating with fever in the searing afternoon heat. Weak and exhausted, he turned his motorised dug-out to the river bank and stumbled into a Shipibo village. Once he was laid down he found he could not get up. The natives took care of him, the herbalist started to feed him a special mixture of herbs. A few days passed with the kindly Shipibo Indians and for John it changed everything. He started getting stronger, drinking Una de Gato and Quera Pedra herbal teas took his health, not only back to where it was before he had been sick, but to an entirely new level of experience.

John then realised he had found the real treasure of the jungle. He began researching the herbs, taking many of them back to the U.S. for further research. He talked to the shamans of various tribes. At the same time, John pledged to give back to the jungle as a symbol of his gratitude. The Amazon Herb Company returns 10% of its profits to the rainforest.
